Performance & ratings
What these ratings mean, in plain English
Water absorption
How much water the tile soaks up. Under 0.5% means almost none, which is why porcelain is safe in showers, outdoors and in freezing weather. Natural stone soaks up more, so it is sealed.
Frost resistance
Can it freeze without cracking? "Frost resistant" means yes, so it can go outside through a Kentucky winter.
Slip resistance (DCOF)
How grippy the surface is underfoot. Floors that get wet need 0.42 or more, measured wet. "Dry" means it was only rated for dry floors, so keep it to dry rooms and walls. The letters are the areas it is approved for: ID dry indoor floors, IW indoor floors that get wet, IW+ showers, steam rooms and pool decks, EW outdoor wet areas, O/G around oil and grease.
Scratch hardness (MOHS)
How hard the surface is on a 1 to 10 scale (10 is diamond). 5 or more shrugs off sand, grit and furniture legs; 7 or more is best for busy entries.
PEI wear rating
How well the glaze resists wearing through, 0 to 5. 1 and 2 are for walls, 3 is fine for any room in a home, 4 and 5 are for stores and heavy traffic.
Breaking strength
How much force a tile takes before it snaps. Floor tile needs at least 250 lbf; higher is tougher.
Chemical and stain resistance
How it stands up to cleaners and spills. Class A is the best (no mark left); Class B shows a faint mark only after the harshest chemicals.
Thermal shock and crazing
Pass means sudden hot-to-cold changes did not crack the glaze or leave hairline lines in it.
Shade variation
How much the pieces differ from one another. V1 all alike, V2 slight, V3 noticeable, V4 very different. Marble looks are usually V2 to V4, so pull tiles from several cases as you lay them.
GREENGUARD
Certified for low chemical emissions into indoor air, as listed by the manufacturer.
